Quality and Food Safety: Mr. Kishan SinghKishan obtained his BSc degree with Chemistry and Biochemistry majors, in 1987 at the University of Durban Westville, now known as University of KwaZulu Natal, in South Africa. He went on to complete a post graduate qualification in Management Sciences as well as City and Guilds (Quality Management) through the UK, obtaining distinctions in both the modules.His work experience began with Ferodo (Pty) Ltd, in South Africa, specifically with respect to design and development of automotive friction materials for automotive braking systems under the ambit of the VDA06 and TS16949 Quality Management System requirements. He later joined S&G Print and Carton (1995) as Quality Engineer, and spearheaded the accreditation of the ISO9001 status for the company. Thereafter, as Quality Manager and part of the Executive Management Team, he continued to further refine and manage the business systems at S&G Print and Carton, implementing digital spectrophotometry as part of the quality management system within the lithographic print processes, in support of Woolworth’s (Marks and Spence) unique requirements. In 2003, he joined Nampak DivFood Mobeni, and is an integral member of the Executive Management Team, managing operational and quality issues in the spirit of Continual Improvement. Under his leadership, the plant has been awarded an A Rating, the highest a supplier can achieve, during three consecutive quality system audits by Unilever South Africa. In 2011, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) rewarded DivFood Mobeni with the SABS President’s Award for the most progressive South African company (amongst those certified by SABS) in terms of Business Modelling, Operational Excellence, Business Management Systems, Continual Improvement as well as measurable carbon footprint reduction. Key to his operational management philosophy is Statistical Process Control and Kishan has integrated computerised SPC across various business processes during this work career.
Kishan has been enjoying lecturing, training and energising students in the fields of Black Belt, Lean Six Sigma Methodology, Quality Management, Operations Management, Supply Chain Management, having lectured the complete City and Guilds (Quality Assurance) syllabus since 1992. Kishan has also been lecturing Packaging Technology for the past 15 years, and has produced the highest academic achieving student nationally in IPSA’s (Institute of Packaging South Africa) One Year Diploma in Packaging Technology in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He is currently the National Chairman of IPSA and has represented IPSA at Packaging Conferences in Mumbai, India (2010) and Tanzania, Africa (2011), delivering papers on SA Packaging Trends, Statistics in Packaging Quality and Environmental Impact of Packaging. He is also Vice President of the World Packaging Organisation and is an Executive member of the WPO Board, responsible for the WorldStar and WorldStar Student Award Programmes globally.
Kishan has a passion for music, both classical as well as contemporary, and spends much time listening to high end audio. He has also authored comparative audio reports on high end audio equipment for various internet sites. Together with his wife he spends much time engaging in Ballroom and Latin dancing, having taken private lessons in these disciplines between 2001 and 2009.
